Gul Cagin ve Arzu Arda Kosar ‘s mixed media work exploring the coming of age process in Istanbul will be on display at Sanat Limani on September 1-19, 2010.
This body of work emerged from the dialog the artists have initiated with a group of youth from the Kucuk Armutlu ghetto in Istanbul, manifested itself with street installations and graffiti in 2009, continued with interactive collage workshops in April 2010 and it all culminates with the gallery installation Youthtopia: S, M, L, XL where artists develop mental maps to examine the ways the process of inclusion and exclusion in realms of realms of symbolic, imaginary and real life and how youth navigate the drawn boundaries of 'the other' and 'the Normal'.
In their quest to fit in within their chosen group, youth go through various voluntary and involuntary transformations. Projection of body image in different places and use of language in different group settings are particular focus of this artistic investigation. Categories of branding of attire surrogate personalities, gestures and adaptation of certain jargon in relation to environment are reexamined in conjunction with local geographies and spaces to reveal deeper structures of what is seen on the surface.
Los Angeles based artists Arzu Arda Kosar and Gul Cagin have been working both individually and collaboratively for the past decade, have participated widely in Turkey and the USA including a show at Borusan Art Gallery in Istanbul that explored Los Angeles and Istanbul art scene, have organized a series of art events in locations including New Zealand, Turkey, Thailand as well as NYC and LA in the USA.

Gul Cagin ve Arzu Arda Kosar Istanbul’daki genc kusagin kimlik arayisini mixed media fotograf, video ve enstelasyon calismalariyla 1-19 Eylul, 2010’da Sanat Limani’nda sergileyecekler.
Sanatcilarin iki senelik bir zaman diliminde Istanbul’un Kucuk Armutlu semtinden bir grup gencle baslattiklari dialog sonucunda olusan, 2009’da sokak yerlestirmeleri ve graffiti calismalariyla baslayip, Nisan 2010’da interaktif kolaj calismalariyla devam eden Coming of Age/ Kendini Bulma projesinin son ayagi olan Genctopia:S,M,L,XL sergisinde sanatcilar gelistirdikleri zihinsel haritalarla otekilestirme/aynilastirma proseslerini inceleyerek Istanbul genclerinin daha onceden varolan 'otekilestirme' sinirlarini asmak icin gelistirdikleri kisisel ve sosyal formlari kaydetecekler.
Toplumun normlarina uyma istegiyle gencler hem gonullu hemde gonulsuz bir cok transformasyondan gecmekte. Kendilerini degisik mekanlarda nasil projeksiyon ettikleri, degisik ortamlarda kullandiklari jargonun nasil degistigi bu arastirmanin yogunlastigi en onemli olgular. Giyinis tarzlari, karekter tiplemeleri, jestler ve mekana uyarli dil degisikleri gibi olgular bu transformasyonun gorsel elementleri. Her iki sanatci bu olusumlarin yersel cografya ve uzamsal ortama baglantilarini ele alip bu iliskileri tekrar gozden gecirecek ve yuzeysel olgularin altindaki daha derin yapilari anlamaya calisacaklar.
Kisisel ve kolektif calismalarini uzun suredir Los Angeles, Kaliforniya’da surdurmekte olan Gul Cagin ve Arzu Arda Kosar Istanbul’da Borusan Sanat Galerisi dahil olmak uzere, Turkiye ve Amerika’da bir cok sergiye katilmis, Alternatif Sanat Mekanlari adi altinda Yeni Zelanda, Tayland, Türkiye, ABD'de New York ve Kaliforniya’da galeri/muze harici ortamlarda sanat sergileri, atölye çalışmaları dizisi organize etmistir.

CUT, MANIPULATE, PASTE: RECREATE ISTANBUL! What is the relation between the ever evolving metropol of Istanbul and its inhabitants? What is the role of psycho-geography for youth coming of age in such a diverse city that is in constant flux? Gul Cagin and Arzu Arda Kosar conceived the Copy, Manipulate, Paste: Recreate Istanbul! workshop to explore these questions within the framework of their “Coming of Age/TRANSISTANBUL” project, part of Istanbul 2010 European Cultural Capital activities
Several informal youth oriented interactive workshops are to take place in the ghettos of Kucuk Armutlu, followed by a public workshop at Kadirga Art Production Center. Gul Cagin will serve as the facilitator to urge participants to cut, manipulate and paste urban elements onto existing cityscapes to suggest realistic, fantastic, utopian visions of the city reflecting the participants’ own needs, wants, aspirations and biases. The work created toward this workshop by the artists and during these events by the participants will be on view at Kadirga Art Production Center until May 10, 2010.
